If someone claims to write a resume well, then perhaps they do, but do they treat your resume like a marketing tool or a template document?

One thing you can be assured of is that Career Origin will break the rules, to ensure your resume does its job!

You may have heard about some of the resume writing rules floating around out there........keep the resume less than 2 pages, don’t include school, only stick to a 10 year career history......bla bla bla.  Recruitment agencies are the worst offenders and will often vigorously stick to these rules, which means your resume will not be unique – it will only spell TEMPLATE.   These so called rules were created for very valid reasons, but let’s consider for a moment that your situation doesn’t fit the mould.  What then?  Do you still stick to the rule book?

Recently I did some work for one my clients, Melissa.  A lovely lady 25 years of age, who has been happily working since she completed her HSC at the age of 18.  She was told by another so-called ‘industry professional’ to leave school off her resume NO MATTER WHAT because it will show her age and age shouldn’t matter.  Ok, that’s a great point and most of the time I totally agree with the whole age thing, but in this circumstance I beg to differ!

What if I received Melissa’s resume in my pile of applications and could only see a seven year career history?  I have no clue how old Melissa is and may start to wonder what she was doing before that time.  Was she unemployed? was she travelling?...........Questions that I shouldn’t have to ask myself.  If I have an abundance of applications and resumes to read through, I am not going to investigate the issue.  Sadly, I would probably just disregard Melissa’s application because she hasn’t told me what I want to know.  In this circumstance Melissa should have included her schooling, so I easily see her career trajectory.  Melissa should be painting the picture for me.  Selling herself.  Selling her story.   See my point??

As human beings each with our own story, we do not fit one mould.  This is why you should invest in seeing an industry professional who knows what they are doing and justify reasons for breaking the rules.

Most of the rule breakers in todays society are the ones who succeed!
