It’s the end of the world as we know it. Doomsday is predicted for 21st May 2011.
Sorry to all those who have booked our services for that new and exciting career move next week. It’s not going to happen, because according to some guy (who, by the way, got a previous prediction wrong in 1994) the world is going to end today!
But I still feel optimistic. Because I know it's a load of rubbish. I have heard it all before and this guy has told me nothing new and nothing different to convince me otherwise. And I am not alone. Others have already jumped on the bandwagon, establishing a support group to provide services to those feeling misled and misguided by these preachers. First meeting – 22nd May.
Bottom line is....if you are going to boast about something spectacular, to boost your popularity and your following, you need to credibility. You need proof. You need to produce. And to achieve these elements evidence and testimony is king.
When developing and writing a resume, the above is very relevant. Your resume/CV is just one of thousands floating around in the job market. Recruiters need to know how you are different. Why should you be believed? Why are you better than the rest? Career achievements must be believable.
Some rules of thumb when writing career achievements; Don’t write what doesn’t wash. Don’t include vague or hypothetical claims. Don’t list a statement of your duties – it’s not an achievement if it’s listed in your job description.
So what is an achievement? An achievement is what you have produced above and beyond the normal expectations of your role and your life in general. Recruiters want to hear the when, what, who and how. Your achievement must be demonstrated and verified. And how do you demonstrate and prove a career achievement? Give it a date, splash in a few figures, sprinkle it with facts and you give it some creditability.
